How free trials turn into charges

Many trials ask for a payment method up front and renew automatically when the trial ends. The end date is often shown once, on a screen you will never see again. Miss it and the first charge lands, sometimes for a full year.

When should you cancel a free trial?

Cancel with a buffer, not at the last minute. A common rule is at least a day before the trial ends, and many people set the reminder two days ahead in case cancelling takes longer than expected. Be aware that with some stores and services, cancelling can end access immediately rather than at the end of the trial, so if you still want to use it, decide your last useful day first.

Set a free trial reminder you will actually see

  1. Log it at sign-up. Name, service, start date and the exact end date.
  2. Add the cancel path. Note where cancelling happens, such as an app store subscription page or the service's account settings.
  3. Use two reminders. Two days before and the morning of the last day.
  4. Screenshot the confirmation. It proves the trial terms if there is a dispute.

Calendar, spreadsheet or app?

A calendar event works but is easy to dismiss and carries no checklist. A spreadsheet never alerts you. A dedicated reminder app fits best because it nudges you repeatedly and tracks the steps. Compare options in our calendar vs spreadsheet vs app guide.

Already charged?

Act quickly. Check the service's refund policy, contact support with your sign-up date and screenshots, and keep a record of every message. Our refund follow-up checklist walks through the steps.

Track trials with DueAction

Copy-and-use checklist

  • Log the service and exact trial end date at sign-up
  • Note where to cancel (app store or account settings)
  • Set reminders 2 days before and on the last day
